Buffalo Systems: British Outdoor Clothing Built for Real Conditions

In a world of mass-produced outdoor gear, Buffalo Systems stands out as something refreshingly different a specialist British brand that still builds technical clothing with a very specific purpose: keeping people warm, dry and functional in genuinely harsh environments.

Founded and based in Sheffield, Buffalo Systems produces functional outdoor clothing in small production runs, maintaining a hands-on manufacturing approach rather than outsourcing everything overseas.
The company has become particularly respected among mountaineers, expedition leaders, military personnel and rescue teams not fashion hikers, but people who depend on their kit to work when conditions turn dangerous.

Unlike many outdoor brands that prioritise lightweight layering systems, Buffalo took a different route. Their garments are built around a combined insulation and weather-resistant concept often referred to as the Double-P system, which integrates a wind-resistant outer fabric with a moisture-managing inner pile lining.
The goal is simple: remove the need for complicated layering by creating one piece of clothing that can be worn directly next to the skin while still regulating temperature.

This philosophy came from practical experience. The clothing was developed for harsh, wet and windy climates especially typical British mountain weather, where traditional waterproof shells can trap sweat and chill the wearer once activity stops.

Trusted by Professionals

One of the reasons Buffalo Systems has such a loyal following is that its reputation wasn’t built through marketing it was built through use. The brand has a long history of supporting military units, police, mountain rescue teams and other specialist users with bespoke equipment. One of these items I have used extensively being the Buffalo Field Blanket, this has been a life saver when I was active with Search & Rescue.

Products like the classic mountain shirts, belay jackets and heavy-duty parkas are designed for sustained exposure to cold, wet conditions rather than occasional weekend walks. Some designs have even been field-tested for decades, reinforcing the brand’s focus on durability over trends.

Made in Sheffield

Perhaps the most distinctive feature of Buffalo Systems today is that it still manufactures in the UK. Its clothing is produced in Sheffield a city with a long industrial heritage and released in limited batches rather than constant seasonal cycles.
This small-scale production helps maintain quality control and contributes to the brand’s cult status among outdoor enthusiasts.

A Cult Classic of the Outdoors

Buffalo Systems occupies a niche space between technical equipment and heritage craftsmanship. It’s not the lightest gear, nor the most fashionable but that’s not the point. The brand appeals to people who prioritise reliability over aesthetics and performance over marketing.

In short, Buffalo Systems isn’t designed for Instagram hikes.
It’s designed for freezing wind, driving rain, and the kind of adventures when turning back isn’t always an option.
